"It can take a very tiny thing for this fragmented, divided population to come together as a single being. Almost nothing: an impromptu conversation in a shop, a waiting room, an airport, a taxi, during a condolence visit, on a street corner, in an elevator—the slightest of these encounters is capable of erasing in a few seconds all the differences I have described. Or rather, the differences then merge in such a way that they suddenly form a mood, an agreement, a resemblance, a hermetic, indestructible whole, that can be called the Lebanese miracle. A sort of shared pleasure in saying the same thing differently." As the #BachProject visits Lebanon to explore culture's role in building an inclusive society, I'm revisiting Dominique Eddé's stunning portrait of this country. Read at The New York Review of Books:

Culture has always been about creating and growing together — so, in the Berkshires this month, we asked how making and creating builds resilience and creates opportunity. Roots Rising is one answer. They give teens the opportunity to grow food on farms and in community gardens and serve it at food pantries around Pittsfield, MA. Learn more about this #BachProject partner here. #cultureconnectsus

Local artists in many Bach Project locations have created posters that explore how culture connects us around the world. For a chance to win a #BachProject poster signed by Yo-Yo, share your story about how culture — art, science, all the disciplines that help us to understand — is building a better world in your community. The more unexpected, the better. Submit your story by August 31 for a chance to win: bachprojectposter.pgtb.me/VmtfWk Nest

Last weekend we were in Berkshire County in Massachusetts, exploring how “making" can build strength, resilience, and opportunity. We asked the community to complete the sentence, "The Berkshires make...” Here are just a few of the answers (c/o Berkshire Eagle): The Berkshires make us gather together The Berkshires make songbirds sing The Berkshires make refugees feel welcome The Berkshires make spontaneous kindness The Berkshires make a place at the table for all 📷 Donna Demari

How can culture transform social challenges into moments that confirm community and activate change? It’s one of the questions behind the #BachProject — help us explore some answers at SXSW next year. Peter Sagal | Pedro Reyes | #cultureconnectsus

“In CHORAL, COLLECTIVE, TECTONIC, the public was invited to remember and ‘sing' the sound of an earthquake they had experienced in the past. The ensemble of those recorded voices played through a wooden structure that vibrated and worked as a large tactile speaker, with cello on top of the structure itself, feeling the vibrations and responding to the recorded sounds.” - with Constanza Alarcón Tennen in Santiago #cultureconnectsus

There's something about Bach's music that makes things whole. I'm grateful to Bach for being the scientist composer he was, to take all of what he knew about human nature – tragedy, comedy, joy, sorrow – and present this in the Bach cello suites. The true genius, then, was in making the listener ear subconsciously fill in the gaps – that's why, to me, people in need feel like they are being helped when they listen. You can listen to #SixEvolutions – Bach: Cello Suites and watch how #CultureConnectsUs:

Sergio Farfán created the #BachProject Chicago poster, which you can see – and purchase – today: https://store.yo-yoma.com/store/ He explains the piece, City’s Beautiful Chaos: “Chicago has built a reputation because of its high rates of gun-related violence, yet many people still call it home and live on to create beautiful memories in this city. The lines create hidden faces—expressions of those who have lost (on the bottom half) but also those who live on (the top half). . . . Look too closely and the design may appear like a mess—where there is no order and only chaos. But if you look at it as a whole, the disorder of lines and colors starts to blend together and make sense, which is a message that many of us need to see: that without the chaos, there is no beauty.” #CultureConnectsUs | Nest

At Dartmouth's commencement this weekend, I shared with the graduates why I think culture is so important. Culture resists reduction and constantly reminds us of the beautiful complexities that humans are made of, both individually and collectively. The stories we tell; the music we make; the experiments and buildings we design. Everything that helps us to understand ourselves, to understand one another, to understand our environment—culture. I encourage all of this year's graduates to practice your humanity daily. Practice that truth. Let it power your decisions. Let it inspire your thoughts, and let it shape your ideals. Then you will soar. You will fly. And you will help others soar and fly. #Dartmouth19s #CultureConnectsUs – http://bit.ly/2IvuVAu

The Catalan cellist Pablo Casals has been my hero since I was very young because he always thought of himself as a human being first; he never put his music or his work ahead of his responsibility to others, to his community, to society. Last week, I spent time in many of the places he lived and worked and I met artists living this same philosophy, using their cultural skills to build resilient, inclusive communities. 📷 Austin Mann
