Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Apr 19, 2019
Jammin’ Me. Released April 18, 1987 as the first single from the album “Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough).” “I wrote the lyrics with Bob Dylan at the Sunset Marquis…Bob and I pored over a newspaper, appropriating the lyrics. Then I took the lyrics I’d written with Bob and put them to a track that Mike had put together. It came out pretty well and was a hit for us.” – TP (“Runnin’ Down A Dream” book) Available on The Best Of Everything at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything

Saving Grace. Released July 4, 2006 as the first single for the album “Highway Companion.” “Highway Companion sounded different... It had a spare quality, showing off more space. It had room for a voice of what seemed to me to be a detached observer, in some cases a narrator-voyeur, floating above it all.” – Warren Zanes (“Petty: The Biography” book by Warren Zanes) Available on “The Best Of Everything” at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything

Here Comes My Girl. Released in April 1980 as the third single from the “Damn The Torpedoes” album. “…it’s kind of an R & B vocal. It’s kind of weird. It’s kind of like our whole vision of the Stones and the Byrds and all that wrapped into one. Where it sort of goes from narration into R&B and then the chorus is almost Byrds-like. But wrapping it all into one bundle, you come up with something that’s original in itself.” – TP (Conversations book by Paul Zollo) Available on “The Best Of Everything” at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Apr 16, 2019
Into The Great Wide Open. Released as the second single for the album of the same name in 1991. “It’s an anthem with a great arrangement, and it’s very fun to play. Once again the lyrics are a whole film if you listen to the story. Brilliant writing.” – Mike Campbell (“An American Treasure” album liner notes) Available on The Best Of Everything at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Apr 15, 2019
I Need To Know. Released as the first single for the album “You’re Gonna Get It” in 1978. “When we made that record we were trying to play something like ‘Land of 1,000 Dances’ by Wilson Pickett. That’s where it started, at least. Not where it ended up, of course. But, by failing miserably, we got to another song.” – TP (Live Anthology album liner notes) Available on "The Best Of Everything" at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Apr 14, 2019
Room At The Top. Released as the second single for the “Echo” album in 1999. “It was a great example of The Heartbreakers at work. On my own I would never have arrived at that arrangement of the song. But they really took it somewhere that I would have never got to by myself.” – TP (“Conversations” book by Paul Zollo) Available on "The Best Of Everything" at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything

Listen To Her Heart. Released as a single in August 1978. “I remember going to the rehearsal the first day I had it, and playing it with the band, and really being knocked out with it, because it was one that really suited me and Mike when we played that riff. And when the song kicked in, I thought, ‘Oh God, this is great.'” – TP (“Conversations” book by Paul Zollo) Available on "The Best Of Everything" at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything

You Got Lucky. Released as the first single for the "Long After Dark" album in October 1982. “It was the first time we had used a real synthesizer on a record. We had to get a guy in to show us how to turn it on and get any kind of noise out of it at all.” – Benmont Tench (“Playback” album liner notes) Available on "The Best Of Everything" at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Apr 11, 2019
Don’t Do Me Like That. Released as the first single for the "Damn The Torpedoes" album in November 1979. “I wrote the song when I was in Mudcrutch…That was something my dad used to say. ‘Don’t Do Me Like That'. I always thought it was a humorous thing…” – TP ("Conversations" book by Paul Zollo) Available on "The Best Of Everything" at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything

Breakdown. Recorded in 1976. "When we cut ‘Breakdown' it was great. There was so much passion and you didn't even know why. You just knew you were going to play you’re f—ing heart out…” – Stan Lynch (Playback album liner notes) Available on "The Best Of Everything" at https://tompetty.lnk.to/TheBestOfEverything
