“Nantes, 15th November 2015. Two days after the Paris attacks. We were on tour with the enhanced Hillbilly Moon lineup, aptly named The HME Rock'n'Roll Revue - with Martin Winning on tenor, Pete Thomas on baritone and my idol Geraint Watkins on piano. We'd just come off stage in Holland when the news came in about the awful carnage of the Paris attacks. Then followed by the news that France had closed its borders. Our next gig was scheduled to be the next day in Massy, Greater Paris Region. Oh and our tour bus was acting up - could barely reach 50mph and we were haggling with the rental company in Paris to give us a new one. So we started the next day with a whole string of uncertainties: Would we be let over the border? IF we're allowed into France, would our bus make it to Paris? IF our bus makes it to Paris, will we get an ersatz bus? IF we get a new bus, will the gig actually be on? IF the gig was still on, would we actually want to perform, considering the circumstances? IF we perform, would any people want to come??? We were let into France. We made it over the border. We got a new van. We did not need to decide whether it would be appropriate to perform or not, because around mid-afternoon the word came in from the promoter that all public events in the Great Paris Region were suspended for five days. We had a - rather sombre - night off. Next gig was the next day in Nantes on the West Coast. Similar questions arose: Was the gig on? (The promoters themselves were unsure) If the gig was on, was it appropriate to perform? Etc. We decided to head out towards Nantes and await the news from the organisers. A couple of hours before the gig the phone call came in: The gig's on! And it was jam packed. And the audience was defiant and festive and beautiful. No, no cowardly terrorist was going to scare ANY of them into submission. Everyone in that room that night had decided to go out and do the things they always did and always will enjoy doing, enjoy every ounce of freedom that they have. Damn I still get all teary eyed when thinking about this (like now haha). I remember mentioning to the audience at the top of the gig how much we'd always loved playing France and how we'd always been treated so well. And how we were so moved that everyone came out to see us that night. But this night was not about The Hillbilly Moon Explosion - it was the people in the room and outside, about celebrating life and love, as brought forth through the noble institution of live music in public places. FLUCTUAT NEC MERGITUR!” - Oliver Baroni
