While recording in Nashville, a lot of down time was spent just out front of the studio, which sat beside a busy street. Cars, pedestrians, bird scooters and bachelorette parties would pass by often. Once, a driver slowed, turned around and pulled in to the driveway for a chat after recognizing the band and wanting to say hello. Even in that very exposed down time, the band would be trying out ideas on an instrument or working out lyrics for a song. I enjoyed how unprecious the space was, but how a very special thing was happening on the sidewalk, alongside everyone else’s lives. During a particularly slow day in the studio, Charity broke out a Shibori tie dye kit she brought to Nashville. Charity is great at incorporating arts and crafts into the day-to-day work involved in being a band. A few of us drove to a thrift store, bought shirts for everyone, and in the studio parking lot, on the small patch of grass next to the dumpster, we did some beautiful tie dyeing. - Claire

Most nights were spent around the fireplace in Joshua Tree. Even in the daytime, when the fire was out, you’d likely find someone sitting, thinking, talking, drinking, writing, playing or napping in front of it. It was a magnetic central point for all, day or night. - Claire

The band and began taking studio breaks at sunset, using it as an opportunity to stretch out, wander down the nearby dirt road and take photos. While the photos were a reason to get us all together, we spent a lot of time marveling at the colorful, desert sunsets. We’d stand in the road until the colors faded and the sky turned deep blue with the dusk before returning to the studio and fireplace for the night of recording ahead. - Claire

While the band began the process of writing the new album, they holed up on a property in Joshua Tree, which included a house, a recording studio, a mixing room and a nice plot of land. Many mornings, before the band dug into work for the day, you’d find Chris, Jon, Tyler or Matty walking around the property. Sometimes they’d listen back to music from the night before or share a passing idea, but more often than not it was a quiet time for everyone to be alone. From my perspective, it felt like a time to gather their thoughts, inspirations and focus for the day of creating ahead of them. - Claire
