TODAY WE CELEBRATE SHANGRI-LA DEE DA A GREAT GUEST VISIT MALIBU HOUSE The thought of anyone from block rockers Stone Temple Pilots working with Rhinestone Cowboy Glen Campbell might at first seem as absurd as porn star Jenna Jameson advocating abstinence. On further examination, it doesn’t seem so bizarre. STP bassist and songwriter Robert DeLeo has spoken in interviews about his love for the country-pop performed by Johnny Cash, Jimmy Webb and especially Campbell. In 2001, Campbell’s budding musician son Cal introduced his dad to the music of the Pilots. For real, this happened. Stone Temple Pilots bassist and songwriter Robert DeLeo was an unabashed Campbell fan, while Glen’s son Cal loved STP. A meeting was arranged and Glen soon invited DeLeo, his guitarist brother Dean and drummer Eric Kretz to back him on a new version of this signature Jimmy Webb-penned hit. There was some talk of further collaboration, but it never came to pass. Soon after one of Campbell’s Los Angeles shows, the band went backstage and met the legendary singer/songwriter. They all got along so well, Campbell invited DeLeo, his guitarist brother Dean and drummer Eric Kretz to record versions of classic cuts such as “Wichita Lineman” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” with him. The mutual lovefest continued when STP singer Scott Weiland produced some tracks for Cal’s rock band. Then, the DeLeos offered to write, produce and play on upcoming tracks Campbell may use on his next record, Campbell’s manager said. “Stone Temple Pilots don’t write the kind of music that Glen would usually listen to,” he said. “But he admires good musicians, and the band definitely fits that bill.” About three months ago, Robert and Dean entered the studio with Campbell to work on the new material. So far, they’ve written a handful of tracks, but Campbell’s manager emphasized that they’re all works in progress at this point and was unwilling to describe them. Campbell’s explorations with the DeLeos aren’t his first forays into rock; he’s a veteran of the genre. In the early ’60s he was one of Los Angeles’ most in-demand session guitarists. Not only did he play on early hits by Elvis Presley, the Monkees, the Association and the Mamas & the Papas, but he also worked with Phil Spector on albums by Jan & Dean and Sonny and Cher. “Another amazing experience that made it worth all the expense of shooting the documentary: Glenn Campbell. His son Cal is a big fan and when we played Phoenix the second time he brought his dad, and we hit it off. Glenn came up to the house and we did an incredible version of “Wichita Lineman,” and we got it on film and audio. What’s spectacular: a rainbow came out over the house.” ‘Wichita Lineman’ with, an old six string bass. So Glen played six string bass, I played guitar, Robert played bass, and Eric played drums. I just watched the footage yesterday and it was touching. At the end of those tunes everyone was choked up. And the 250 grand we spent on documenting these sessions was all worth it for that day alone.” Viéndolo mejor, no parece tan extraño. WICHITA LINEMAN – LYRICS I am a lineman for the county And I drive the main road Searchin’ in the sun for another overload I hear you singin’ in the wire, I can hear you through the whine And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line I know I need a small vacation But it don’t look like rain And if it snows that stretch down south won’t ever stand the strain And I need you more than want you, And I want you for all time And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line And I need you more than want you, And I want you for all time And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line SHARE >> PLAY >> #KEEPTHELEGACYALIVE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZedvSSZdLo

TODAY WE CELEBRATE SHANGRI-LA DEE DA THE DISAPPEAR DOCUMENTARY Stone Temple Pilots filmed a behind-the-scenes documentary as they recorded the LP in their beach villa-turned-recording studio. “It set out to be like a modern-day ‘Let It Be,’” Chapman Baehler, the film’s director, said Thursday (April 5, 2001), referring to Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 Beatles documentary. The film follows singer Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz through the record-making process, from hammering out songs in preproduction to putting the tunes down on tape. “It’s got a lot of really beautiful, moody shots — these art shots with either Dean or Robert playing an old organ in a really beautiful space, to Dean and Scott playing acoustic, to some totally awesome rock-out live stuff in the main recording space,” Baehler said. An established rock photographer who has shot STP for years, Baehler was working with the band on a coffee-table book when they approached him about the documentary. The project is Baehler’s first venture into filmmaking; all of the footage was shot by him and his sister, Rebecca Baehler. Both the book and the film should be out later in 2001, he said. STP moved into the Malibu house in January to work on the follow-up to 1999’s platinum No. 4. The band is now mixing the album in Atlanta with longtime producer Brendan O’Brien, Baehler said. The always ambitious Weiland said late last year that the band planned to make the recording a double album. Shortly after work got underway, Robert DeLeo said that goal looked realistic. “Scott’s in a space right now where we’re not cramming to just get a single record done — he’s in a space where I think a double record is possible.” There was no more words about the status of the double-album plans, but a source at the band’s label, Atlantic, said the label is hesitant about the idea. TODAY WE CELEBRATE SHANGRI-LA DEE DA ROADIE CHEFS On June 19th 2001, Stone Temple Pilots fifth studio album, Shangri – La Dee Da was released to mixed to good reviews. In truth this would prove to be STP’s most experimental record to date, touching on every influence from The Doors and The Beatles right through to Bowie, with the heavier aspects of the band discography thrown in for good measure. The production of the record would be equally decadent; STP would hole themselves up in the Malibu Mansion in California and would write enough material for a planned double album an idea that was scuppered by longtime producer and collaborator Brendan O’Brien perhaps wary of a potential lack of focus. There were also plans to release a fly on the wall documentary and accompanying coffee table book but neither of these projects came to full fruition. To give you an idea of the current climate of music at a time before Napster and falling to non existent record sales, STP had their very own chef (Jaime Laurita) come in to live with them at the Malibu Mansion, now that’s Rock n’ Roll.

TODAY WE CELEBRATE SHANGRI-LA DEE DA TOO COOL QUEENIE This song was written by Scott Weiland, who at the time refused to comment on it’s subject, but later revealed that it was about Courtney Love, something most fans suspected. The lyrics describe a woman who berates a man in a rock band until he kills himself – a thinly veiled reference to Love and her husband, Kurt Cobain. Weiland and Love spent some time together in the late ’90s when she was at odds with Cobain’s bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. He said that “Too Cool Queenie” was “a fanciful version of the story of her and Kurt.” In a 2016 interview with Courtney Love on the Anna Faris podcast, Love spoke about this song being written about her: “Some people would write songs about me that I didn’t date, like Stone Temple Pilots wrote a song about me, about a ‘self-destructive blonde chick.’ They’d write the ‘self-destructive blonde chick’ song and say that’s about me”. When pressed about whether Love and Weiland had a relationship, she replied, “I got him out of rehab once, we had an adventure, we stayed at Shudders, I got him into rehab, but we never did that no, I never dated him, or whatever you want to call it”. SHARE >> PLAY >> #KEEPTHELEGACYALIVE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26dGmQshzwQ

TODAY WE CELEBRATE SHANGRI-LA DEE DA HELLO, IT'S LATE This song was created in the purple era but it was published years after that, there are some complications to state the who is the subject of this song. Scott was married to Janina Castaneda and got divorced in the February, 2000, it is known that Scott was seeing Mary Forsberg already in the 98′ (year where Scott split up with Janina) and got married in May 20th, 2000. G: Your wife Mary is a model, and I heard you signed with her agency. SCOTT: Yeah, so we could do things together. There are a couple things being negotiated now. We’ve posed together for different photographers. Doing something together we’d make a lot more money than her doing something on her own. She doesn’t want to do this much longer. She can’t stand the modeling industry. It’s worse than the music industry. There aren’t any unions to protect models. G: You wrote “Wonderful” for her. SCOTT: Yeah, and “Hello It’s Late” was written after we had a really horrible argument. You can still have your heart broken when you’re in love with somebody and you’re living with them. Scott said that this song was created after a big argue with his wife (Mary) but the band said that the song was not published in Purple because they did not find a way to make it work until Shangri-La Dee Da album. There is people that thinks Scott took the song that talked about Janina and adapted it to Mary, but who really knows. The short guitar sound right before the first line is a lot louder on the video version First verse: The background guitars are louder in the mix on the video version First Chorus: Nothing matters again, I didn’t think it’d last that long But I’m just sittin’ on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud There are barely audible background vocal on this part which is just Scott’s speaking voice. On the video version, the speaking voice supports the main vocal through the whole above mentioned section, but on the album version it stops after the words “But I’m just sittin’ on”. “This merry-go-round, And the music is too loud” is just the clear vocal. Also, this background voice is slightly louder on the video version. Cymbal-like sound right before “It’s just a game” , “It kills me just because” and “It can’t be erased” lines is a lot louder on the video version. “It can’t be erased, We’re married” line is louder in the mix on the video version. Scott sings the line “We’re married” two times after the first chorus of the video version and just once on the album version. Instrumental part between “We’re married” line and the second verse is twice longer on the video version. Second Verse: The background sounds are a lot louder on the video version Right before the solo Scott sings the line “We’re married” two times on the album version and three times on the video version. There’s a small instrumental section between “We’re married” line and the solo on the video section. There is no such section on the album version. Solo: Completely different solos Last Chorus: The last chorus of the album version features choir-like background vocals “AAA-aaaah” and organ sounding solo. Video version – not. Conclusion: These version are completely different mixes. They feature completely different solos and endings. Scott sings “We’re married” line more times on the video version. Also, a different vocal effect was used, which made Scott sound softer and deeper on the video version. Which version is better in your opinion? But I’m just sittin’ on”. “This merry-go-round, And the music is too loud” es solo la voz clara. TODAY WE CELEBRATE SHANGRI-LA DEE DA WONDERFUL This was written by Scott Weiland and STP bass player Robert DeLeo while the band was on tour. Weiland considered it a love song for his wife at the time, Mary, dealing with the possibility of loss. “‘Wonderful’ has me dreaming about my death,” he wrote in his memoir. “In the next world, I envision Mary as my guide.” Mary Forsberg was Weiland’s second wife. They were married from 2000-2007. According to Weiland, this was his favorite Stone Temple Pilots ballad. A live version featuring guest vocals by Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington is on the album Family Values 2001. STP was a big influence on Bennington, and he got to know the band when both groups played the Family Values Tour. In 2013, Bennington took over as the group’s lead singer. “Wonderful has me dreaming about my death”, escribió en sus memorias. “In the next world, I envision Mary as my guide”. TODAY WE CELEBRATE SHANGRI-LA DEE DA DAYS OF THE WEEK Scott Weiland wrote this about how he felt when he got out of prison; he spent five months in jail in 1999 for violating his probation from a heroin conviction. Every day he was faced with new challenges and new insecurities. This was released as the first single from the fifth Stone Temple Pilots album, Shangri-La Dee Da. The band wanted the harder-edged “Coma” to be the first single, but their record company insisted on “Days of the Week,” deeming it more commercial. Weiland: “A rock ‘n’ roll feel of Zeppelin during the Presence period, but melodically and lyrically where I was coming from was Elvis Costello or Joe Jackson.” The band is portrayed as door-to-door salesmen who escape their monotonous lives by turning into astronauts and blasting into space. Weiland was a door-to-door salesman when he was 19. In the video, Scott Weiland is floating in space through the airlock. This is a reference to Stanley Kubrick’s epic movie 2001: A Space Odyssey when David Bowman, the main character in the film, is denied access to the ship by HAL 9000 (the ship’s main computer). Years Ago: Velvet Revolver Goes Full-Blast With Their Debut Album "CONTRABAND" https://youtu.be/LkvaaJZXJk4 There have been super groups off all kinds throughout the ages of rock. But there will always be one Velvet Revolver. It was the early 21st century, Axl Rose was all that remained of the original Guns N' Roses as the rest of the original lineup had parted ways. Then in April 2002, at what should have been a fun little reunion between GNR alumni turned into something much, much different. Mötley Crüe drummer Randy Castillo had fallen ill, so Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum agreed to perform together at a benefit concert for him. Joining them were Josh Todd and Keith Nelson of Buckcherry. From there they noticed that there was still a spark between them. Though Todd and Nelson did seem like they could cut it in whatever was cooking in Slash, Duff and Matt's minds, they decided to go in a different direction. Come September the GNR alums had put out ads looking for a lead singer that combined the talent of Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. That October they managed to rope in guitarist Dave Kushner, who played in McKagan's band, Loaded, but the search for a lead singer continued. Months would go by as they would try out some very established names for their project: Travis Meeks of Days of the New, Kelly Shaefer of Neurotica, Sebastian Bach and many more were among the individuals that auditioned. While other names like Mike Patton of Faith No More, Myles Kennedy and Ian Astbury of The Cult were all rumored to have recieved invitations, but reportedly turned the gig down. Then by April 2003, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots walked through the door and the rest is history. They played their first show together at the El Ray in Los Angeles, CA which consisted mostly of Guns N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots songs, though it would be the first time they played Velvet Revolver originals "Set Me Free" and "Slither" before a live audience. After signing a deal with RCA, it was time for the world to meet Velvet Revolver. Said to have written over sixty songs with Scott Weiland, the band narrowed the list down to thirteen. "Set Me Free" became the first song to generate chatter about the band after it was first included in the soundtrack to the 2003 film The Hulk. Now that "Set Me Free" served as the appetizer to their debut album Contraband, it was time for them to deliver the fans the big, meaty, handbanging entreé, "Slither." The song sailed high on the Billboard Rock Charts for weeks and they won the 2005 Grammy award for "Best Hard Rock Performance." With two pulse-pounding hits under their belt, the next single to make it off of the album was the lovesick ballad "Fall To Pieces," which Weiland wrote about his heroin addiction and the amount of damange it did to his relationship with his wife Mary Forsberg (who also appears in the video). The next single up to bat was "Dirty Little Thing," which summons the same energy they had when they were first a GNR/Buckcherry mashup. They even gave Keith Nelson a songwriting credit for the song, despite not being in the band. Just by listening, you know it's the kind of song that was best listened to live. What happened as a one-time GNR reunion morphed into something else much greater. Their debut album topped at No. 1, went double platinum, and granted them the chance to share the stage with more of the greats like Elton John and Stevie Wonder. As drama and clashing personalities would come to plague the band during the release of their second album, fans are ever-hopeful that in the wake of Scott Weiland's death, Velvet Revolver could still continue one day.

Scott Weiland, Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz recorded most of Purple in Atlanta with producer Brendan O’Brien. The album features some of the group’s most iconic tracks, including “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline” – which both topped the Mainstream Rock chart in 1994. PURPLE: SUPER DELUXE EDITION explores the making of the album with a mix of unreleased music that includes demos (“Unglued” and “Army Ants”) and early versions of album tracks (“Meat Plow” and Interstate Love Song”), plus acoustic recordings (“Big Empty”). The collection also features three unreleased live performances from the 1994 KROQ Acoustic Christmas show, including a version of “Christmastime Is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the new collection, however, is STP’s previously unreleased demo of “She Knows Me Too Well,” a song the Beach Boys originally recorded in 1965. PURPLE: SUPER DELUXE EDITION closes with a previously unreleased recording of the band’s August 24, 1994 concert in New Haven, Connecticut. The electrifying 17-song performance captures the band in top form with both electric and acoustic sets, featuring 10 songs from Purple along with hits from Core (“Plush” and “Sex Type Thing”) and covers (David Bowie’s “Andy Warhol” and Woody Guthrie’s “Gyspy Davy”).
