Huge congratulations to everyone who took part in The Soloist Competition this year. The 20 finalists were Carla Moran, Dublin; Karina Hayes, Dublin; Sreya Sudheer, Dublin; EJ Dunne, Louth; Barry Murphy, Louth; Lauren Carroll, Meath; Lisa Moran, Meath; Helen Keenan, Monaghan; Classic Harmony (The Kelly Family), Kildare; Holly Prestage, Wicklow; Sophie Doyle, Antrim; Cobhla Surlis, Cavan; Mallory Maisner, Cork; Sarah Hoben, Down; Aoife ic Aoidh, Down; Aimme Banks, Galway; Kerry Ann McCreery, Sligo; Cleo Griffin, Tipperary; Caoimhe Boyle, Wexford; Hayley Crosbie, Wexford; All of the finalists gave outstanding performances and any one of them would have been a worthy recipient of the title. Huge thanks to our judges whose impossible task it was to select the winner: Greg Beardsell, Conductor and Music Educator; Phil Ferguson, Performer and Music educator; Susan Forde, CBOI Director and performer. At the end of a very intense and wonderful competition, the winner Cobhla Surlis, was announced.

Our new teaching began earlier this month with 55 talented young people availing of FREE LESSONS and INSTRUMENTS 🎺🎻with expert tuition in Violin, Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet, Trumpet and Trombone from the CBOI’s exceptional team of tutors: Marieclaire Brodie, Aoife Dennedy, Gareth Hughes, Bernie Balfe, Phil Ferguson and Baz McBrien. After almost a full week’s intensive tuition, our fledgling musicians have made extraordinary progress. Huge thanks to Louth Meath Education & Training Board for making the state-of-the-art facilities at Colláiste Chú Chulainn available to us, and to Louth Leader for their very generous supporting of this ground - breaking project.

COBHLA SURLIS - WINNER OF THE SOLOIST 2019 We are thrilled to announce that the Winner of The Soloist 2019 is Cobhla Surlis from Cavan. This year’s lucky winner will perform with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland to audiences of over 50,000 people during our arena tour in Spring 2020. Performances will be held at iconic venues including the Simmons Court Arena, RDS, Dublin; the Odyssey Arena, Belfast; the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, the Kingfisher Hall, Galway Arena and Waterford Institute of Technology Arena. In addition to these exceptional performance opportunities, Cobhla also receives the coveted Soloist Trophy and a €1,000 cash prize. We are thrilled to be showcasing the outstanding talent of this young stellar performer, Cobhla Surlis, to audiences across Ireland and the UK. Cobhla Surlis is a twenty-year-old student attending Maynooth University. She is a member of the celebrated Maynooth University Chamber choir which recently won the coveted 'John Mannion Award' at Cork International Choral Festival. Cobhla gained recognition in 2016 when she sang the National Anthem at the ‘Raising of the Flag’ ceremony to launch commemorations celebrating the foundation of the State. Cobhla has performed as soloist on many more notable occasions including during the recent visit of the Papal Nuncio to Ireland for the presentation of Pope John Paul Awards. Cobhla enjoys singing both Classical and Musical Theatre and has completed the Royal Irish Academy of Music exams in Musical Theatre and Popular Singing to Grade 8 with distinction. She also has a silver medal for Sean-Nós singing. Huge congratulations to everyone who took part in The Soloist Competition this year. From almost 400 on-line entries, 50 of Ireland’s most promising and talented young performers made it through to the semifinal which was held yesterday (Sunday 11th August) at the Mill Theatre, Dundrum. Our panel of judges had the unenviable task of selecting 20 performers to go through to the final. 100 young talented musicians from all over Ireland and Northern Ireland gathered this week for our Summer Workshop iN the superb surroundings of Colláiste Chú Chulainn, Dundalk. We have put together a thrilling programme to celebrate our 25th Anniversary Season and Peace Proms 2020, with everything from the driving rhythms of Bernstein’s Mambo to dazzling Disney medleys and many powerful anthems. Huge thanks to our dedicated team of music educations for tutoring the orchestra sections during the week and to our luminous conductor Greg Beardsell for drawing all of the musical strands together and creating the magic that is uniquely CBOI. Sincerest thanks to the Louth Meath Education and Training Board for facilitating our rehearsals at their wonderful new school - Colláiste Chú Chulainn. COUNT US IN - FREE TRUMPET & TROMBONE LESSONS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 11- 16YRS. (All other instrument classes are full). CLOSING DATE: Friday 12th July. Participants will be provided with *An instrument on loan *Free weekly group lessons. Lessons are 2-hours long and are held in Colláiste Chú Chulainn, Marshes, Dundalk. The course begins with a free intensive course at the end of July and regular lessons from September. Calling All Piano Players CBOI LAUNCH PERCUSSION PROGRAMME Closing date: Friday 26th July If you are a young piano player aged 13 - 24yrs, have achieved Gr 5 or higher and would like to join the PERCUSSION SECTION of the renowned Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, THIS IS FOR YOU. The CBOI is launching an initiative aimed at encouraging young PIANO players to take up PERCUSSION and join the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. Piano players can already read difficult rhythms and have mastered coordination so moving in to percussion is not difficult for them. If you are interested in this initiative and can commit to our schedule, we’d love to hear from you. Please email: [email protected] or phone our office on 042 937 0494 *This programme is for young piano players aged 13 - 24 yrs who have achieved a merit in Grade 5 or higher. *The initiative will commence with an intensive course in August. *Candidates will then become full members of the CBOI participating in our full schedule of rehearsals and performances. Each year the CBOI receives numerous enquiries from young people who play piano and would love to be in the Orchestra but can’t as they don’t play an orchestral instrument. This initiative is geared towards giving these young people the opportunity to join the CBOI and become part of our successful team of extremely talented and committed young musicians. 🎻🎶✨DYNAMICS SUMMER CAMP KICKS OFF THIS MORNING✨🎶🎻 We wish all our budding young violinists a fantastic fun fill week of music and games as they take part in our very first Dynamics Violin Summer Camp in St. Joseph’s N.S. Muirhevnamore, Co. Louth. Congrats to their wonderful teacher Marieclaire Brodie for the amazing work she has done with all the children to date and also to the fabulous Caroline Manning who is Music Co-ordinator at the school and assisting at the course. Both Marieclaire and Caroline are former CBOI members – our musical future is safe!!!

🎺🎻COUNT US IN - INTRODUCTORY MEETING. 📯🎶 We are looking forward to meeting all our new 'COUNT US IN' members at our introductory meeting which will take place in the Colláiste Chú Chulainn, Dundalk at 2pm this Saturday 6th July 2019. 'Count Us In' is a pioneering music education project modelled on the Venezuelan system of music education which is regarded as the best in the world. It is based on group tuition and caters for young people aged 11 - 16 years. Musicians trained under ‘Count Us In’ can go on to become members of the Orchestra and experience the enormous pride that comes with being a valued part of a successful, dedicated team. Huge thanks to Louth Leader for funding this programme. 🎶🌟🌟💫

🎶💙🕊PEACE PROMS PREP - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES FOR TEACHERS 👩‍🎓👩‍🎤: We wish all our Teachers a very rewarding and fun filled week as they take part in our Professional Development Courses in Dublin. Teachers will be introduced to all the new Peace Proms music for 2020 along with conducting skills and much more. Over 600 schools (30,000 children) in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK have already signed up for Peace Proms 2020 and we are very excited to share the new music with course participants this week. Thanks to our amazing course tutors Ross Scanlon and Fiona Sweeney; to Siobhán Kerr and everyone at Dublin West Education Centre for facilitating the courses; to the Principals at Scoil Mhuire Senior School, Blakestown and Castaheany ETNS, Ongar, for hosting us and to the Department of Education and Skill for accrediting the courses.
