As the ’60s ended, JOHN LENNON was turning his back on the rock’n’roll establishment and turning on to peace activism and experimental art. There were Bed-Ins, radical films, free jazz, acorns and the extraordinary Plastic Ono Band. Here, we learn about Lennon’s restless 1969 – a critical transitional period between the Fabs and his future career as a solo artist. “He wanted to break out the box of being a Beatle,” reveals Sean Ono Lennon. #OnThisDay, 11 FEB 1970, John & Yoko and The Plastic Ono Band filmed their performance of Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) for the BBC's Top of The Pops. The first solo Beatle to perform on the long running British TV institution Top of the Pops was John with a Plastic Ono Band comprising of Klaus Voorman (bass), Alan White (drums) and a blind-folded Yoko Ono (holding card instructions in one version, knitting in the other). For both versions (recorded for 2 separate shows) John sang a new vocal on top of the original recording. For the knitting version the band were joined by BP Fallon playing bass and Mal Evans playing tambourine. The Apple Records official House Hippy Richard DiLello can be seen taking photographs on stage during the performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLy2SaSQAtA
