Hello friends, Uncle Jackson here with some deep thoughts. Have any of you seen this video? It’s amazing. This dude is unreal. You could probably scroll through it, to get the point but it’s pretty great all the way through if you have the time. I’ve watched it twice already. Apparently, I’m not the only one. It’s got millions of views and the irony isn’t lost on me. I mean, how wild is it that millions of people are getting their kicks watching survival and nature videos by streaming them through devices and technologies that are literally brand new. I mean, that dude is doing shit that is old as dirt and we’re all tuning in on our smartphones! It’s as if there’s some deep longing in modern people to connect somehow with their ancestors and somehow we’ve managed to scratch that particular itch by making youtube videos. I mean, that dude spends all day whittling a fucking spoon from a tree branch. I’d buy that shit for 1.99 on amazon with free shipping. And that dude made it with his hands. To me, that’s incredible. But even more incredible is that people want to watch that. What does that mean? Is it merely a nostalgia thing? I think yes, partly. But, it’s not mere nostalgia. I think one of the ways we connect with our past is through our objects and obviously the most basic objects are things like tools. We’ve got a long history with tools and I think there’s something built in us (no pun intended) that longs to connect with our ancestors and one of the ways we do that is by acting out their old practices. (In this case, building things by hand). And the crazy part is that we’re at a point in history where our thirst for this sort of thing is quenched by only watching it, and not actually doing it. Well, except for the dude in the video, but you get my point. I mean, I have no particular desire to go off the grid and build a log cabin. I very much like to play rock concerts and order room service. I like fancy-ass hipster coffee joints and Netflix. I like to think I welcome modernity into my life, even if it’s with a critical eye. It’s just so mind-boggling that videos like this prompt so many questions about humanity, technology, etc. I mean, it’s a guy building a fucking cabin for crying out loud. It shouldn’t be so philosophical. But, it totally is. https://youtu.be/AxM9FYSs8V4
