I KILLED THE PROM QUEEN Apr 14, 2016
Hi all, Jona here. Being that it has now been 10 years since the release of Music For The Recently Deceased, I wanted to write you all to share with you a few things about our journey making the album because you guys are always sharing so much with us. Now this is going to sound like a bit of an old guy telling a ‘back in my day’ story and its going to be long, but bare with me. 11 years ago in September of 2005, 5 friends flew across the globe, travelling to Sweden for the very first time to begin to make a record. This record would essentially shape the band in a lot of ways and bring them to the next level. MFTRD is a special album to us in so many ways. It was our first time recording overseas, with an international producer, and not just any producer, but one who had made so many of our favourite albums over time – Fredrik Nordström. The album was entirely self-made, meaning that we paid for every cent of the process ourselves, with money WE earned. The process also taught us how to overcome many adversities and continue to strive for what we are so passionate about: making music. We began making this record like almost any other band, in a dingey little rehearsal space in Edwardstown, South Australia. We worked day and night on writing music for 3 months. It drove our girlfriends and family members crazy that no one ever saw us. We had saved any penny we could from the previous tours and some of us even worked regular jobs and put in our own personal money. We had sent out some emails to various ‘wishlist’ producers and engineers, but Fredrik was at the top of our list, having recorded our favourite bands, Soilwork, In Flames, At The Gates, Dark Tranquility…and the list goes on! When we received a reply from him saying he had the studio time free and was interested in recording us I swear I was like an excited schoolgirl. He even listened to our track When Goodbye Means Forever and told me in the email that we sounded 'kind of like In Flames but even heavier’ and I was like psshh, yeah right. So we went to our old travel agent and asked 5 flights to Sweden please! Back in 2005 we didn’t really have a manager, our friend Bronwyn (then) at Destroy All Lines booked our tours and helped with some management stuff on and off, so we were kind of going this alone. And that meant we arrived in Gothenburg after 30 something hours of transit, without a place to stay organized. Back then I had my first Apple laptop, the iBook G3 with a whopping 15gb of memory, so we headed to the mall to soak up the (then scarce) free wifi and find a place to live. We ended up spending the first 2 nights at a hostel in Liseberg, the city’s theme park, and then found a really cool little hostel apartment much closer to the studio in an area called Slottskogen, a large park area within Gothenburg. The apartment was tiny with bunk beds, and everything, I mean EVERYTHING was IKEA. The next few weeks were spent tracking the album with Fredrik and his studio partner at the time Patrick. They were in the process of building a new studio at the time so there were many times and late nights where they were not present, and we were given a print out of pro tools shortcut keys and told to ‘go for it’. This taught me a lot about the recording process and a lot of my recording knowledge today still comes from this process. We couldn’t believe how heavy we sounded, I still remember walking into the studio 3 weeks later on the first day of mixing. Fredrik had said ‘I have a song mixed ready for you to hear, do you want to hear it?’ We listened to €666 and I swear I had never heard anything so massive! The drums were huge, the guitars were huge, we literally felt blown away. So 4 weeks and $30,000 later, we had a finished record and not really much to do with it. Throughout the process we had also realized a lot of personal and professional issues were arising between the four of us (JJ, Sean, Kev and myself) and Crafter. I began emailing record labels, mainly labels that had released our other favourite albums. We emailed Victory, Trustkill, Ferret, Nuclear Blast, Century Media, Spinefarm just to name a few, as well as a tonne more. We received a lot of ‘sounds cool but we aren’t interested, sorry’ responses. We had just finished our first headline tour of the UK and were on a tour in the US in December of 2005 and we decided we had to part ways with our vocalist Crafter. We had met a young lad named Ed during the UK tour and after speaking with him a little bit, it was immediate that we knew we wanted him to sing for our band. This meant rerecording all of the vocals, with mostly new lyrics (aside from a few that Kev, JJ and myself had written). Unfortunately, due the original mix files getting lost during the studio in Sweden’s move and switching from predominately analogue equipment to almost all digital, it meant having to be completely remixed and remastered. So in January of 2006 Jona flew back to Sweden for a week to meet Ed and record yet again! The emailing to record labels went on for a few months until finally a gentleman named Darren Cherry at a label in Australia called Stomp had heard the record and loved it. Stomp, who were actually more of a distributor wanted to release it and said they could get it released international through their partners. At this point we were approximately $36k deep into our own pockets making this album but Stomp gave us a small recoupable advance, which helped with the finances a little. Darren announced that they had partnered with Metal Blade Records in the US and Canada, Golf records in the UK and Europe and Howling Bull records in Japan for a worldwide release and suddenly all the hard work and money felt like it had paid off. In June 2006 Music For The Recently Deceased was released worldwide and in August we embarked on the MFTRD Australian tour booked by Bronwyn at Destroy All Lines, which was internally nicknamed the 55 shows of Death tour. It was the longest and most ambitious tour we have ever been a part of. With the only places being played more than once being our home-town of Adelaide for the first and one of the final shows, and a support to Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God and Unearth right in the middle of the tour, we played 54 shows Australia-wide in total, spanning just over 3 months, and only missing just 2 shows (one show in Loxton SA due to a damage to our trailer, cancelled show in Bordertown SA). We also suffered 2 broken towballs, a van accident which almost had us miss the final show – Metal For The Brain Festival in Canberra, and a rolled semi-written off trailer. Those were the days! At the end of the tour we filmed the music video for Say Goodbye with director Matt Weston in Kiama NSW. In around 2009, Stomp went into liquidation, and we were left owed approximately $25,000 in unpaid royalties that we never saw. Now 10 years later MFTRD has been released on 7 different record labels in 4 different formats, on both vinyl and CD. Although I have no clue as to the exact amount of sales its done worldwide, I would say its somewhere in the vicinity of 50,000 – 70,000 worldwide. Thanks for reading the (very long-winded, yet shortened version of the) story of making this record. Here’s a list of the MFTRD Aussie tour (55 shows of death) dates below just for fun.
