BBC News In 1988, a nationwide strike by the National Union of Seamen (NUS - now part of the RMT union) put the festival at risk. Negotiations to allow the ferry to sail were conducted by an unusual source - the singer Elvis Costello. He was a huge star, having made his name in the music scene's post-punk new wave. Costello negotiated the passage of the ferry in exchange for performing a benefit concert for the workers on his return to Aberdeen.

This morning's brief promise of Spring was punctured by the news of the passing of Gary Stewart. It is rare enough to find people of insight, kindness and loyalty but Gary had all these qualities in abundance. Friends have called or written all today trying to make sense of the impossible and the inexplicable. As the vocation of criticism has become more fragmented, spiteful and distracted, so people with Gary's gift for advocacy needed to be valued. His appreciation of our work was immensely generous and deeply informed by personal emotion. With his help, I was encouraged to tell a broader tale as we compiled my catalogue for release on Rhino Records, augmenting the original albums with every outtake, sketch and mistake that I could find, all annotated until I'd run out of paper and ink. Our work together was clearly superior to both prior and subsequent editions. It is equally rare to find a music website with genuine passion and curiosity as the one Gary helped found; Trunkworthy - giving contributors space to both celebrate and disagree but offering the reader a chance to make one after another invaluable discovery. When Gary took up curation duties at Apple, he sent me a series of playlists using an existing template from best known to rarest choices. I could not have disagreed with any of his selections, even though we both knew that on another day, half of the songs might have had different titles and that's the way it should be. As an illustration of Gary's generosity, when the Imposters and I brought our "Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers" tour to the Greek Theatre, Gary didn't seek a place on the guest list to which he would have always been welcome but rather bought a stash of tickets to give to friends as that record had meant a lot to him and he wanted his pals to hear what we were up to with the songs after all these years. I even had to decline his offer of hosting a reception after the set, as I knew I had to sing the next night and talking into the small hours would be unwise. I know that when we return to the Greek in July, the band and I will pour a chaste glass and raise a toast to our friend. This generosity extended beyond mere music business tributaries and blind alleys and into a sense of community and the desire and need to be of service. I know I am not alone in being grateful for having known and worked with Gary and send my deepest condolences to his family and all his many friends.

“Imitation Of A Kiss" "The Beastly E.C." and Deborah Harry are touring together this summer but some of you may not know that we have sometimes appeared together as vocal contributors to the work of Roy Nathanson and The Jazz Passengers from the mid-90s onwards. Deborah sang alongside Jimmy Scott, Mavis Staples, Jeff Buckley and Bob Dorough on the wonderful album, "The Jazz Passengers In Love" and she and I performed some of those songs along with Roy Nathanson's arrangements of "God's Comic" and "Man Out Of Time" and a version of "The Tide Is High" at the opening night gala concert of the Meltdown Festival of 1995. Young At Heart “For someone who, at seventeen, spent many fruitless hours trying to work out the correct fingering for "Tell Me Why", it was quite a shock to read Neil Young's message regarding my opening set at his upcoming Vancouver shows. I had been looking for a low-key way to return to the stage after a brief vocational retreat and had imagined that my appearance might come as a complete surprise to the audience. It seems that Neil had different ideas. I want to thank him for his kind remarks, which I might echo ten-fold and I will look forward to seeing everyone at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, knowing that we will have a fine old time.”

I Want You (1986) - As a glimpse into someone’s darkest moments, it’s incredibly powerful, its impact heightened by the rawness of its one-take production.

Music Aficionado "Amidst all his other accomplishments, his work as a producer for other artists—often at crucial points in their careers—tends to get brushed beneath the carpet. So this is where the correction of that long-standing oversight begins. Here's a tour of some of Costello's most interesting and memorable projects as a producer for other artists."

Fast Company "Music industry veteran T Bone Burnett has no big love for Big Tech. In a scorching keynote speech this week at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, the Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician/producer spoke out against the growing power of Silicon Valley giants like Google and Facebook while affirming the importance of artists’ rights. “Artists create conscience,” the O Brother, Where Art Thou? producer said. “The artists are our only hope.”

Rock Cellar Magazine "It was the T-Bone Burnett-helmed The New Basement Tapes project, Lost On The River, which paired long lost Bob Dylan lyrics from his late-60s Woodstock period with music and melodies by a group that included Elvis Costello, Jim James, Marcus Mumford and Rhiannon Giddens as well as Dawes support slot on Dylan’s 2013 North American tour, that brought Goldsmith to the broader public’s attention."
