Elvis Costello & The Attractions ‘Shipbuilding’ Live on Casablanca, Sweden 1983.
Elvis Costello Feb 02, 2019
Financial Times The Life of a Song: ‘Shipbuilding’, “Shipbuilding” was pretty much the last time a popular song about war made a mark on the public consciousness in Britain. Vietnam had spawned a whole sub-genre; there were plenty of songs about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. By the time the war on terror rolled round, popular music in the English-speaking world had abandoned political commentary.”

Freakonomics Elvis Costello Full Interview a conversation with the iconic singer-songwriter, recorded for the Freakonomics Radio series “How to Be Creative.” He’s an original — a musician’s musician, a writer’s writer. He’s also got the rare ability to create music that is both high-minded and open-minded — and, as you’ll see, he can do that in conversation as well. Billboard Beyond Weezer 10 Underappreciated Covers Albums. LPs that were either unjustly maligned upon release, entirely ignored or somewhat forgotten in the sands of time. No 4: Elvis Costello, Almost Blue (1981) At the height of his commercial viability in the early '80s, Elvis Costello slipped into his spurs and indulged his penchant for old-fashioned country & western music.

Much of the credit for keeping the heart and pop soul of this record should go to Nick Lowe, who produced the album, with Roger Bechirian engineering. The recording venue was once again Eden Studios in London and the sessions were booked for what seemed like an incredibly extravagant six weeks. At the time, it seemed as if we were making an impossibly sophisticated leap from the sound of “This Year’s Model” but listening now there are very few production devices that sit between the listener and the songs. The confidence and cohesion of The Attractions playing is the product of twelve months intense touring. The sessions were not without dissent and tension but we probably never had quite this level of consistent musical agreement again. Get Your Copy Here... http://bit.ly/ArmedForcesVinyl

Rolling Stone 'Armed Forces' “Costello writes songs that are elusive at times, bursting with bright phrases you can’t always catch He sings about violence with a vibrant romanticism, and about love with murder in his heart. He writes short, blunt compositions that don’t pretend to be artful, though they are, and don’t demand to be taken seriously, even though they’re more stunning and substantial than anything rock has produced in a good long while. He doubles back on himself at every turn, and you’re forced to take it or leave it.”
