Last night in Knoxville was a pretty special one. Two sold out shows at one of my favorite venues in the world, the Bijou Theatre, and a great day of hanging with Ellie’s family. This photo was about 5 minutes before we went onstage. It’s been a memory to have the kids on the road with us, seeing us in our element. Thanks to all of you who have come out to the shows and bought tickets to see the rest of the tour. It is definite one we will never forget! See you tonight in Bloomington Indiana. In November of 2017, a dream came true. Almost every singer and songwriter alive today would put Willie Nelson on their Mount Rushmore of living legends. I have been a huge fan of Willie since I was in college. I love his jazz singing, his inimitable songwriting, the loyalty of his band and family, his deep love of his home state of Texas, and the way he never stops touring. Ellie and I saw him for the first time at Farm Aid in 2005, then again with BB King down on the Gulf Coast and every time if feels like a family reunion. So, when I got the call that Willie had invited us to do a 10 day tour with him, I was speechless. Not only did we get to tour with him, we got to bring the whole family. From Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth we made a big circle through Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma and back to Texas. We played honky tonks, regional small town theatres, casinos, and an arena in Houston, a little taste of everything. No matter the room, everyone adores Willie Nelson. They sing along to his songbook of American classics and even at 84 he was still able to stand on his feet the whole time and give the audience a glance of his legend. I got to sing onstage with him 3 or 4 nights of the tour, singing harmonies to “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “I’ll Fly Away” and “I Saw The Light”. What a thrill. My final memory from the tour was after our last show with him. Ellie was holding Emmylou side stage, and he walks offstage, stops, gives her a kiss on the cheek and says, “Goodnight princess.” This is a moment we will tell her about for the rest of her life. Once we got home from the tour, “On the Road Again” became our family anthem. The kids love it, and we spend our lives on and off the road. So, for our kids, and for ourselves, we wanted to record our own version of the most classic of our friend Willie’s songs. We hope you like it. I have a good friend who lives in Iraq. His name is Jeremy Courtney. Jeremy founded and runs the “Preemptive Love Coalition” which is a front line coalition of aid workers who go straight to the front line of war zones offering aid and rescue. A couple years ago, during the midst of the worst ISIS violence and resulting fallout of the Syrian refugee crisis, Jeremy wrote an article in the Washington Post called, “The World is Scary as Hell, Love Anyways.” Amidst the real and metaphorical shrapnel of war and hell, he wrote a call to action that even in midst of the worst realities the world offers, our call is to Love Anyways, even when it seems like the world is on fire. After reading this article, Ellie and I become regular donors and activists on behalf of Jeremy and his team’s work, and they sell a simple sweatshirt to raise money for the work, “Love Anyway”. One day last year, on a day when I woke up with the heavy weight of the world's many troubles, Ellie was wearing the sweatshirt. I started singing what became this chorus, eager to put up a fight that day. I happened to have a songwriting session with my good friend Dave Barnes on the books for later that morning. I showed up with that chorus line and Dave and I made it dance. “When the world has gone to hell, no story left to tell, love anyway.” I knew Ellie’s voice would be a perfect match for this sentiment. No matter your circumstances, your story, your history, there are times when the world around you is crumbling and it seems like there is no reason to keep going, to keep loving, to keep dreaming, but that is the only path to meaning, at least in my experience. To read more about my friend Jeremy’s work, visit Preemptive Love Coalition or visit https://preemptivelove.org/

A couple years ago, after playing a show at a beautiful University theatre, the director of arts basically told me he’s not a fan of my music because there are too many love songs in my show. It really pissed me off, for a variety of reasons. One, there are plenty of songs in our show that are not love songs, Live Forever, Here We Go, Shine Like Lightning, Tennessee, Good Light etc etc… But mainly because the love songs I write are about my wife, not nebulous attempts at writing universal rom-com pleasantries. When I sing about waking up with the sadness and madness in What Would I Do Without You, I am referencing the many tough mornings that life has thrown at me, and the gratitude that Ellie has been there by my side for most of those moments. When I sing about dirty dishes in the kitchen sink in The Wine We Drink, it’s a prayer of irony and gratitude that the mundane workings of a marriage are sometimes the ones that hold the most meaning and power and put wind in the sails of longevity. So, after being pissed, instead of letting his commentary affect my creativity, I thought about how grateful I am for the gift of companionship that marriage to Ellie Holcomb has been, what a powerful and wonderful woman she is, and I wrote another song about her. Electricity is that song. It tells the story of young love, with all of its hesitations and fears alongside all of its expectations and fireworks. I dislike a cheesy, meaningless love song as much as any other of my fellow malcontents, but a good one really cuts me wide open. As I say in this song, “The heart of any good love song is a cold heart getting warm.” That is me, a cold hearted, glass half empty pessimist who has been changed and made better by the electric and magic power of love. Honestly, I don't care if you disagree.

Hey friends, we are thrilled to announce 3 new “Drew and Ellie” songs released today! After touring together last year for the first time in 6 years, Ellie and I decided to release some more new music. You can listen here: https://bit.ly/2ADgLuc “Electricity” is a no-apologies love song I wrote for Ellie after a guy told me he didn’t like my love songs. “Love Anyway” is a song inspired by a friend who works in the war zones of Iraq and Syria delivering aid and medical care to the victims of violence. Finally, after touring with Willie Nelson, we decided we wanted to record our own version of “On the Road Again” since it is now one of our kid’s favorite songs and a pretty accurate picture of our lives. We can’t wait for you to hear these and we hope you enjoy listening to them as much as we enjoyed recording them. Save them to your playlists, share them on social media, and most of all, come see us play them live in February. A bunch of the shows are already Sold Out but there are seats left at some of them too. Shoutout to Jeremy SH Griffith for producing these 3 tracks, and some great playing by SUNBEARS! on “Electricity" and Brian T. Murphy on “Love Anyway”. And a big shoutout to Willie Nelson for writing one of the greatest traveling songs of all time.
