Ben reads during a recent broadcast of Live from Here from his soon-to-be-released memoir - 'A Dream About Lightning Bugs.' The chapter recounts a conversation he once had over dinner with William Shatner when he and Shatner were collaborating on the recording of Shatner's 'Has Been' album. Wednesday, June 5. 7PM ET. I'll be live streaming again on www.patreon.com/BenFolds - this time I'm gonna read a chapter from my little book "A Dream About Lightning Bugs." The book's not officially out until late July, but I need to practice reading it out loud since I have to record the audiobook version in studio next week! I'll be chatting as well for a bit afterwards while on Patreon. Cheers, Folds

Tuesday May 28. 7 PM ET. My next Patreon live stream, this time joined by guests Tall Heights. My friends Tim and Paul (look 'em up if you don't know 'em) were part of my touring band last summer, and will be back with me again later this year for more tour dates. Tim plays guitar and odds and ends. Paul is a cellist. Both are fantastic musicians. We'll gather around my home piano with their axes and voices as I look at more of your lyrics and work on more new songs. So many to get through! www.patreon.com/BenFolds

Live Stream Today! www.patreon.com/BenFolds 4pm Central/ 3pm Mountain/ 2pm Pacific/ 10pm UK/ 7am Sydney/Melbourne/ 6:30am Adelaide I'm going to see if we can get a good start from my home on creating new songs using four more sets of lyrics previously submitted by patrons. We got a lot accomplished in our last songwriting session. We'll have a fine batch soon to do when we get back in the studio. I'm preferring to concentrate on the songs first, then let the arrangements and recordings happen once they're ready. At the end of today's hour of songwriting, we'll take an additional half hour for a piano lesson of sorts. Shot using a camera over the shoulder. Just let me know via my Patreon page what song(s) you want to learn (straight from the horse's hands). This one will be non-OBS, no delay. Digital compression etc. Soon, when we start making these songs happen in the studio, we'll go to 20-second delay and fine quality. I'll leave this session up on Crowdcast for patrons for later viewing. Cheerio, Ben

Tonight's "Scotch & Vinyl TV" live stream at 9 PM ET at www.patreon.com/BenFolds: "MONO AWARENESS NIGHT" As in mono records post-RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) curve standardization. I'll 'splain. Vinyl needs some adjustment to sound right. Printed flat, it will sound very thin. So manufacturers of records have always given it a boost, while manufacturers of audio equipment always tried to keep up with exactly what boost was given so that they could accurately compensate. But by the mid 1950s there were too many different adjustments, or 'curves,' to keep up with. 'Curve' describes the shape of adjustments on a graphic equalizer. Each label had their own curve. You may notice that older phono preamps often have four or five settings for playback EQ compensation. For instance COL was Columbia, London Records was LON. Depending on what label you were spinning, you'd need to have the right setting. Finally, in 1954, the RIAA stepped in and had everyone agree to one curve - the RIAA curve, which is the modern standard. Mono was the paradigm up until the early 1960s. Nobody had thought of hearing music any other way. Stereo, when it arrived, was widely viewed as a novelty that would soon pass. The art and science of recording, the musicality, the methods began in a single channel playback. That's a bigger deal than you might think and we were very good at it by the 1960s. The idea that you were aiming for a coherent reproduction of a performance through one channel is a very focused one. The way you create space is a little different. It's like knowing you have to pack in one suitcase rather than two. One of the problems with playing mono records in our modern era is that the equipment we use now isn't ideal for mono playback. What we shoot for in our audio playback today is a little different. We like loads of bass, a big stereo field, loud loud loud. We can get into all of that more tonight, but what it means is that in order to get the information from the grooves of a great early 1960s mono recording, it's far better to have a cartridge and needle that is designed for the task. The shape of the groove - think of it as a ditch - is different and the information is organized a little differently. Yes you can play your old Beatles mono recordings on a stereo cartridge and be happy enough. But when you actually get the right cartridge and needle on the job, you can hear a lot better what was going on. It has a solidity that's hard to describe. The stereo cartridge sounds far less direct and punchy for that task. During a future Patreon session, I'll connect an old preamp with all the ancient mono curve settings, and we can get into 78's and older recordings. They're surprisingly good and I dare say so good that many of their qualities have proven unrepeatable. So, damn. I got shit to do. So see you at 9 PM ET when I fire up the mono cartridge (Miyajima), a turntable with a heavy tonearm, and a Tallisker 10yr. Ben
